Enigma People Solutions is recruiting a talented Snr Test Engineer for a world leading photonics company. Our client is a world leader in optical designing, testing and manufacturing, working with OEM customers worldwide and providing optical systems, assemblies and components for demanding applications, often for deployment in harsh environments.

The successful candidate will head up our test engineering capability within the product engineering team  and be responsible for the design and implementation of test solutions for the characterisation of optical components and systems, these test methods will also require transfer to manufacturing using the NPI gate process. The Test Engineer will provide technical knowledge for both the hardware and software aspects of test for optoelectronic, fibre optic, RF components, and electronic assemblies.

This is a senior role in the team and the candidate will be required to mentor and performance manage a small team of test engineers. There will also be a requirement to support previously released product with fault finding, test, software, CI activities and product qualification.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and develop test methods, processes, and hardware for optoelectronic packages, modules and subassemblies, automating these tests where possible.
  • Identify, design, develop and procure interfaces and specialised equipment required for the testing of optoelectronic packages and subassemblies.
  • Work alongside Development Engineers, Customers and Product Engineers to design and produce solutions to match the high demands of our customers.
  • Take a lead technical role in the Product Engineering team to enable projects to be completed in a timely manner against product release schedules linked to NPI gates.
  • Specify the necessary materials, circuit boards, fixtures, tools, equipment and outside services to create test solutions for the company’s products.
  • Assemble, integrate and commission test hardware, software, fixtures and equipment.
  • Advice and support manufacturing engineering with the implementation and auditing of gauge R&R and SPC procedures to ensure test reliability and consistency.
  • Develop procedures and train personnel against these.

  • Facilitate and support the infeed from the development team to drive corporate strategy of moving up the value chain and delivering new components to the market.
  • Support the commercial demands of the business and in some instances take the lead with customer communication.
  • Meet deadlines and maintaining clear communication with all stakeholders.
  • Have a full understanding of ISO9001 and AS9100 quality management systems.
  • Drive and report on all assigned projects using tools such as Gantt Charts, Actions lists etc.
  • Support the technical investigation phase for the RMA (Product Returns).


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject such as software engineering, physics, mathematics, electronics or equivalent experience. 
  • 5+ years’ experience in a test engineering role.
  • Experience in optics/photonics preferable.
  • Experience in technical design, process development and automatic test solutions.
  • Proven internal presentation skills.
  • Experience in a manufacturing and product development environment essential. 
  • Ideally some experience of project managing and performance managing of staff.
  • Knowledge of testing and characterising fibre optics, photonics and modules/systems.
  • Understand the business system tools, ERP/MRP, NPI, Engineering Change, ATE software and complete all related activities against company procedures.
  • Be fully versed in project KPIs and understand how actions and project cost, product quality and on time delivery effect site performance.
  • Have an understanding of development strategy and objectives and align projects with customer goals.
