Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Mechanical Engineer

Ref: 1325Tuesday 11 May 2021

Up to £45,000

Enigma People Solutions is recruiting an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a niche award winning power electronics company that is experiencing an exciting period of growth.

Our client is an award-winning company currently involved in a variety of power conversion projects, that include: high efficiency single and three phase AC to DC converters, wave-energy power take-off devices and fully digital microprocessor-controlled converters. The Power range of these converters covers 500W to 25kW and the projects often involve industrial/academic collaboration.

The team comprise of a small experienced group of engineers working with Academia, consultants, design partners, manufacturing suppliers as well as their customers to provide optimal design solutions to customers’ needs and requirements.

Essential duties & responsibilities

This role is an important addition to the overall team as previously the mechanical engineering function has been contracted out. Increases in the type and scope of work mean that there is a need to bring this function in-house. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the project teams in the design, analysis and implementation of mechanical assemblies, enclosures, fixtures and cabinets for a variety of power conversion products.

The successful candidate will be expected to support the project's technical lead in meeting requirements contained in the product definition, from initial customer specification to prototype and/or low scale production. As a shared engineering resource, the candidate will work on several projects at any point of time and will work with the team members and customers to create complete mechanical design solutions. The candidate will also advise the engineering team on applying a mechanical design process and the CAD tools required to provide the required Mechanical Design solutions.

The small, close knit nature of the design team means a successful candidate will be able to influence the future direction of the company’s innovation (IP), technology and products.

Skills / Experience

Extensive experience of 2D and 3D CAD software is essential, and knowledge of AutoCAD Inventor related tools would be beneficial.

Regarding areas of application, the candidate should have experience of enclosure design (milled, folded metal, castings, etc.) and an understanding of mechanical assemblies commonly used in medium to large electronic assemblies (heatsinks, heat-plates, extrusions, enclosures, equipment cabinet assemblies, custom fixings, cable assemblies, transformer bobbins, etc.)

The candidate will be expected to develop detailed mechanical part drawings, cable drawings, assembly drawings, assembly procedures and top level BOMs for the company’s products.

3D Mechanical modelling of PCB Assemblies and their associated components is important as a constrained space is frequently presented in which to locate the power conversion electronics. There is often the need to resort to innovative spatial solutions in order to place and package the components in an allotted volumetric envelope, whilst still meeting mechanical requirements for robustness and thermal dissipation.

Familiarity with thermal and stress analysis, fluid dynamics and liquid cooling are major advantages, however, this role has a bias towards assembly of prototypes, so experience of 3D printing, CNC prototype manufacture and CNC tool path creation would be of greater importance. A desire to be hands on and the ability to make modifications to prototype hardware is also of great value.

Over and above the technical experience, it is important that the candidate is suited to the company’s environment. Our design team is a small, fast moving unit, working on multiple projects.  The successful candidate will need to be innovative, flexible and pragmatic, with good time management skills and the ability to deliver targets to tight timeframes. The variety of the projects and their complexity means that the candidate needs to be capable of working independently on some tasks while being part of a larger team on others.
