Enigma People Solutions is delighted to have been exclusively retained to recruit an experienced Optical Transceiver Product Engineer for Alter Technology’s new Photonics Design Centre in central Scotland. New investment is allowing our client to build upon their significant progress already made on laser products for Quantum applications and optical transceivers for intra-satellite communications and will provide the resources and expertise to fully exploit these emerging and growing markets.

Your role will involve all aspects of the design and performance of optical transceivers and will allow you to be an innovative leader in the field. You will be responsible for many stages of the product design, from concept feasibility through to full scale manufacturing.

It is anticipated that there will be full interaction with customers and suppliers and the development of products to specification in a timely, quality, cost effective manner.


Job Description:

Optical transceiver product engineer required to carry out the following major activities:


  • Full “cradle to grave” understanding of the optical transceiver product.
  • Be actively involved in the optical transceiver product design.
  • Project manage the development of the optical transceiver product line, ultimately transferring to the production team for manufacturing.
  • Manage subcontractors required to bridge the technology gap in any given project.
  • Fully define and generate product data sheets for the optical transceiver product line.
  • Work closely with the optical and mechanical design team to meet project deliverables.


  • Demonstrated a good understanding of optical design/simulation.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of RF and the influence that design and manufacturing changes can have on RF performance.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of control electronics and the influence that design and manufacturing changes can have on device performance.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of materials properties relating to packaging (e.g. thermal expansion, thermal conductivity).
  • Optical transceiver performance evaluation (using DCAs, BERT, Pattern Generators, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzer).
  • Experience in high-speed electrical circuit design, layout and test.
  • Verification of prototypes and generate EVT reports.
  • Failure mode analysis and trouble-shooting for yield improvement.
  • Field expert in one or more of the following:
    • RF / Electronic design
    • Optical design
    • Mechanical design
  • Basic knowledge of the following assembly processes:
    • Wafer saw, epoxy and solder die attach, wirebond, package sealing, free space optic / lens align techniques.
  • Design for manufacturing, FMEA, DOE
  • Project management (including generating and maintaining project plans).



  • Optics/Engineering/Science degree or above.



  • Strong and relevant industrial experience.
  • Experience in optical component & system design.
  • Zemax optical design software experience an advantage but not essential.
  • Solidworks design software experience an advantage but not essential.
  • Knowledge of harsh environment qualification standards (MIL Standards, ESCC Standards) an advantage but not essential.


Functional Competencies:

  • A proven track record in Optical Transceivers and their applications is essential.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the techniques and equipment used in the assembly of semiconductor level micro and opto-electronic components.
  • Ability to continually maintain an overview of project schedules and to plan future resource requirements while discussing detail with the relevant individuals.
  • Ability to work within cost, quality & time constraints to meet customer requirements.
  • Ability to work under pressure, understand priorities and highlight resource gaps and likely project slippage in advance to allow recovery or commercial management.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to participate in, contribute and in some cases drive conference calls with key customers.
  • Initiate and chair regular project meetings and design reviews.
