This is a hands on position that will play a key role in realising the company’s industrial sensing and instrumentation products. As a competent mechanical design engineer, you will be the focal point for the conception and design through to realisation of high-quality mechanical parts and robust assemblies. You will either be working collaboratively with other internal and external engineers to produce holistic solutions to complex and demanding requirements for products that will be expected to survive in harsh environments. Other times you will be empowered to find a solution and complete a task on your own. Our client is an ambitious, high-growth technology start-up developing novel sensors with integrated digital solutions across the Energy sector. The Energy sector is currently going through an exciting transitional phase and our client is perfectly positioned to take full advantage of the new opportunities and market dynamics. Currently working with global energy companies and system integrators to test and deploy their sensors and digital applications across traditional industries like O&G, to reduce emissions, and new high-growth sectors like Carbon Capture & Storage and Hydrogen. Over the next 10 years the aim is to become the global leader in the measurement and analysis of industrial processes.

The company has completed its initial seed funding round, secured national innovation prizes and is looking for driven, ambitious individuals that can really make a difference and want to be involved in a fast-paced, high growth technology company.

Responsibilities

•             Contribute to the analysis and engineering of new product mechanical requirements.
•             Conceive, conceptualise, design, outsource to manufacturing and test mechanical parts and subassemblies.
•             Conduct trade studies between different materials, geometries and manufacturing methods.
•             Conduct studies using simulation and/or calculation of thermal, static structural and vibration performance of parts.
•             Produce 2D/3D models for simulation and manufacturing.
•             Produce technical documentation, technical communications, and bill of materials lists.
•             Produce simple renderings to communicate concepts.
•             Devise test methods to validate design requirements.
•             Discuss and resolve design related production problems.
•             Interface with outsourced manufacturing to clearly communicate designs.
•             Attend and assess the mechanical performance of prototypes in experimental studies.

  • 3-5 years working in diverse product design, e.g. in studio or integrated consultancy, ideally in the design of industrial instruments.
  • Highly competent in Solidworks design and Simulation, with good knowledge of PDM. Working knowledge of Photoview360/Visualize; Solidworks Composer beneficial.
  • Demonstratable experience of working effectively in multidisciplinary teams, ideally involving electronics and optomechanics.
  • Strong awareness of subtractive manufacturing processes for metals, in particular milling and turning, and Design for Manufacturability implications. Experience in laser welding beneficial.
  • Intuitive knowledge of materials and their behaviour, ideally in harsh environments.
  • Experience with surface processing methods including anodising, phosphating, bead-blasting.
  • Experience with elastomer-based static seals, e.g. o-rings.
  • Comfortable with the use of basic hand tools.
    Candidates possessing experience of product design for explosive atmospheres and product environmental testing would be very attractive.
