Enigma People Solutions is delighted to have been exclusively retained to recruit an experienced Lasers and Quantum Optics Engineer for Alter Technology’s new Photonics Design Centre in central Scotland. New investment is allowing our client to build upon their significant progress already made on laser products for Quantum applications and optical transceivers for intra-satellite communications and will provide the resources and expertise to fully exploit these emerging and growing markets.

The centre will focus on supporting the Group’s development of highly integrated, miniaturised and robust laser products to be used in quantum-enabled positioning, navigation and timing systems (narrow linewidth diode laser modules). This role reports to the Head of Design Centre of Alter Technology TUV NORD UK LTD and provides a great opportunity to be developing exciting laser technology to enable new real-world quantum applications and markets. The design centre will operate as an early-stage business within the framework, support and financial assistance of a larger company allowing the best of both worlds in terms of flexibility and stability.

Your role will include but not be limited to:

  • Design, build and characterize breadboard and prototype laser systems, ideally related to frequency stabilised narrow linewidth diode lasers systems, and resolve the detailed technical challenges required to industrialize this technology
  • Support integration of laser systems into cold atom-based applications and systems
  • Work with a team of packaging, mechanical and electrical engineers to build a unique telecoms style packaged diode laser-based system that can withstand wide temperature operation or high vibrational loads in high-reliability environments
  • Participate in brainstorming meetings, conceptualize, develop and troubleshoot non-standard technical approaches to fundamental problems
  • Take part in the NPI process, participate in periodic project meetings
  • Contribute to manufacturing, test procedures, user manuals, process development and training for manufacturing personnel for transition of products from R&D to manufacturing
  • Provide on-going product support to manufacturing, marketing, sales, and service
  • Liaise with our academic, RTO and commercial partners

To be of interest you will be able to demonstrate:

  • PhD in physics, optics, atomic/molecular physics, quantum optics, spectroscopy or laser engineering
  • Experience in product introduction from feasibility to released product desirable 
  • Familiarity with narrow linewidth frequency lasers (ideally both in design and build and application use) and with principles of mechanical design; computer-aided design software experience advantageous, but not essential
  • Basic knowledge of electric circuits, ideally in laser frequency stabilisation, servo controllers
  • Ray tracing software experience (Zemax preferred) beneficial, but not essential
  • Track record in the field of atomic, molecular, and optical physics as well as in the application of narrow linewidth lasers (e.g. spectroscopy, atomic clocks, cold atom-based sensing and timing)
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in lasers and electro-optics and experience with electronics test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analysers, network analysers, frequency counters)
